Abstract

619,846. Radio signalling. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and ESPLEY, D. C. April 15, 1946, No. 23436/47. Divided out of 619,772. Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (v)] In a radio link repeating system of the general kind described in Specification 619,772, one or more of the repeating or receiving stations is or are arranged to invert the frequencies of the derived signal band before amplification, whilst others amplify the band in its uninverted form. The inverted and the uninverted versions of the signal preferably occupy identical frequency ranges, so that identical amplifiers can be used throughout the system. That part of the distortion of an amplifier which is a function of frequency is compensated by using inverted and uninverted signal bands at alternate stations. The derived signal band may be a lower sideband resulting from modulating the original signal on a sub-carrier, or an upper side-band, or a band comprising the whole of one sideband and a portion of the other. Transmission from station to station may be effected by modulation of the derived band on a shortwave carrier and radiation of one side band. If the lower side-band is radiated, it represents the derived band in inverted frequency order, and by mixing it at the receiving or repeating station with a local short-wave, this inverted band may be reduced in frequency so that it lies within the desired frequency limits. The Provisional Specification of 449,322 also is referred to.
