Abstract
619,692. Umbrellas. SINGER, J. J. July 10, 1946, Nos. 20625 and 20626. [Class 134] In a retaining device for the ribs of umbrellas or the like in which an outer retaining sleeve of uniform internal diameter is slidable on an inner sleeve secured to the base of the umbrella handle, either to embrace the free ends of the ribs or to be free of them, the inner sleeve fits the handle at one end portion only of its length, the remainder being unbacked by the handle so as to be yieldable, and the inner sleeve has the portion fitting the handle of a smaller external diameter than the portion frictionally engaging the retaining sleeve. An inner sleeve 4, Fig. 1, has a portion 5 fitting snugly the reduced diameter part 7 of the handle 1, and a portion 6 of increased diameter forming a clearance with the part 7. The retaining sleeve 8 forms a frictional fit over the portion 6 of the inner sleeve. In a modification the part 6 is slitted at 9 and 10, Fig. 4, to provide increased resiliency. In alternative embodiments the inner sleeve 4 may be of uniform diameter, the enlarged outer diameter part of the inner sleeve extending beyond the base end of the handle, or the part of the handle opposite the enlarged outer diameter part of the inner sleeve being further reduced in diameter.
