[Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group V] In a press for forging and other operations, the ram is movable vertically in guides by means of two normally divergent levers having their lower ends pivoted to the ram and to links secured to the base of the press, the levers extending upwardly above the press and being adapted to be moved together by power means to effect a downward movement of the ram. The base of the press comprises a bed 3 supported on a series of vertical base-plates 8 disposed in parallel spaced relation for the reception therebetween on opposite sides of the bed 3, of banks of heavy duty upstanding links 9 pivotally mounted on the plates 8 by transverse link pins 10. The upper ends of the links are pivotally connected by transverse pins 11 to two pairs of plates 13, each pair forming the lower end of a relatively long lever 12. Between the pins 11, the pairs of plates 13 are connected by pins 15 to the upper end of a ram unit 4 slidable in guides 5 and carrying at its lower end a tool 7. The balance of the levers 12 is such that they tend to move apart so that the plates 13 rest on stops 17 mounted on top of the press body 1. In this position of the levers, the ram is raised. By means of a cable 18, pulleys 19, 21 and 22 and a winch (not shown), the upper ends of the levers may be drawn together, thus forcing down the ram 4.
