Abstract
615,689. Gas turbine plant. BALLANTYNE, D. H. July 16, 1946, No. 21304. [Class 110 (iii)] A working fluid used only for starting a gasturbine power plant is provided by the burning of a slow-burning explosive, as cordito, or by a reduction process in which the decomposition of a solid or of a liquid, such as hydrogen peroxide, results in the production of free gaseous oxygen. This working fluid may act directly on the blading of a turbine of the power plant or may be supplied to an auxiliary starting turbine or other motor. When hydrogen peroxide is used, phosphoric acid, sodium phosphate or 8-oxyquinaline is added as a stabilizer. It is forced by compressed air into a steam generator formed by a chamber containing accelerator salts, such as calcium permanganate and potassium oxalate, carried on porous blocks of stone or cement. In a jetpropulsion plant, the starting fluid is delivered to a chamber 26 and is directed on to the running blades 18 of the main turbine by a group of nozzles 27 which extends over one-ninth of the circumference of the stator structure. The nozzles are formed by grooves in the ring 25 which are closed by a conical surface on the part 29. Specifications 582,151 and 585,509 are referred to.
