Abstract

615,278. Shaft couplings; securing articles on shafts. GREENE, B., BARNETT, W., and BARNETT, C. July 29, 1946, No. 22560. [Class 80 (ii)] Means for securing a pulley or the like on a shaft comprises a split sleeve 1 loosely mounted on the shaft 2 haying an externally tapered surface 3. The boss 6 of the pulley has an internal conical bore, and a thick radial flange 7 integral with the boss has transverse diametrically opposed tapered channels 8 formed therein which partially register with similar channels 4 in the sleeve 1. Insertion of tapered keys 4a causes a wedging engagement tending to bring the slots into register and cause relative axial movement of the boss 6 and contraction of the sleeve 1 on the shaft 2. This arrangement may be used for coupling shafts of the same diameter together. For coupling shafts of different diameter, each shaft is provided with a split conical sleeve 1 which is in wedging engagement with a common surrounding member 6.
