Abstract
Polycarbamates of the formula R(OCONH2)n, wherein R stands for an acyclic radical substituted or not and n is a whole number greater than one, are prepared by reacting n moles. of ammonia with the chloroformic esters obtained by the interaction of one or more of the compounds having the formula R(OH)n with n moles. of phosgene. The chloroformic esters may be prepared by mixing the reagents at about 30-35 DEG C., conveniently in solution in an inert organic liquid or by mixing the hydroxy compound with liquid phosgene. Ammonia may conveniently be added to the solution of the chloroformic ester, preferably at about 50-60 DEG C. Examples describe the preparation of the bis-carbamates of ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, 1 : 4-butane diol, hexamethylene glycol, decamethylene glycol and octadecane-1 : 12-diol and the tris-carbamates of tristearin-11 : 111 : 1111-triol (hydrogenated castor oil, triolein - 11 : 111 : 1111 - triol (castor oil) and 11-hydroxystearic-b : b 1-dihydroxy ethylamide (obtained by reacting methyl-11-hydroxy stearate with diethanolamine) by formation of the corresponding chloroformates and their treatment with ammonia. Other starting materials mentioned are glycerol, dibenzoyl-mannitol and N : N1-ethylene-bis-ricinoleamide.
