614,225. Hydraulic torque converters. WATSON, F. (Aktiebolaget Ljungstroms Angturbin). Aug. 28, 1945, No. 22075. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A hydraulic torque converter has pump blading 18 driven by the shaft 16, fixed reaction blading 56, and two sets of turbine blading 32, 42 running in opposite directions. Blading 32 drives the output shaft 26 direct, but blading 42, splined to shaft 40, drives the shaft 26 through sun-wheel 64, fixed centred planets 68, geared sleeve 72 and one-way ratchet rollers 78, the gearing ratio causing the blading 42 tc run at twice the speed of blading 32. When desired, the ring gear 100 can be locked by the brake band 102, this causing the axes of planets 98 to rotate the geared sleeve 72 and also to drive the output shaft 26 through the over-running clutch rollers 86.
