Abstract
A method for refining impure, and more particularly silver-containing lead, consists in adding to the molten lead a quantity of zinc, just sufficient for decreasing the arsenic content to the desired value, in stirring together the lead and zinc, then in allowing the mixture to cool while constantly eliminating the overlying layer which forms, after which the copper, silver and other precious metals which may be present are elminated by any known refining operation, for instance, by a further addition of zinc followed by stirring and removal of the overlying layer. The quantity of zinc used to remove arsenic depends on the initial arsenic content of the lead and also the copper content, if copper is present, and it is greater, the higher the contents of arsenic and copper and the higher the temperature at which the removal of the overlying layer is completed. The elimination of precious metals may follow immediately after removal of the arsenic or the lead may be solidified between the two treatments.
