Abstract
Selenium containing impurities such as oxides of lead, iron, aluminium, copper and silica is purified by treatment with molten alkali at a temperature of 360 DEG C. or above. The selenium is dissolved with the formation of alkali selenide and selenite together with some polyselenides and selenate. Undissolved impurities, such as iron and copper oxides are separated by filtering, and if desired the selenite and selenate are reduced by means of charcoal. The molten mass is then dissolved in water and treated with an oxidizing agent, preferably air or oxygen, with the formation of selenium and alkali hydrate. The remaining impurities may be removed by acid washing. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to British Specifications 134,536, [Class 90], and 423,084, and U.S.A. Specification 1,945,074.
