Abstract
613,349. Heating liquids by passage of current. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. June 21, 1946, Nos. 18708 and 18709. Convention dates, June 26, 1945 and June 30, 1945. [Class 39 (iii)] An electrode boiler 1, in which a current is passed through a liquid, e.g. water, which issues as a jet 20 through at least one orifice, and impinges against an electrode 2 located in the steam spate 3 of the boiler, is provided with a movable screen 9 to regulate the amount of water hitting the electrode 2. A pump 5 delivers the water 4 to a jet outlet vessel 7 provided with nozzles 8, from which the water emerges to impinge against an impact plate partially surrounded by a screen 24. The movable screen 9, running on guides 10 and 11, is operated either manually or by a motor, through a crank 13 and rod 12, and has an inwardly directed blade whereby a single jet of liquid can be divided. The impact plate may be flat or convex, or comprise two flanges set at an angle to each other, in all cases the liquid dividing into two streams on hitting the plate, and being deflected round to its rear face by means of the screen 24. After flowing down the impact plate, the liquid falls onto a grid 15 to close a circuit in parallel with that through the jets.
