Abstract

Mono-chloropyrazine is obtained by admixing chlorine and pyrazine at 150-600 DEG C. to effect a spontaneous reaction optionally in the presence of an inert diluent such as nitrogen, argon, helium or neon. The reaction is non-catalytic at 450-600 DEG C. and catalytic at 150-450 DEG C. Catalysts instanced are activated carbon, quartz chips, refractory aluminium oxide or diatomaceous earth impregnated with cupric chloride solution. An excess of either reactant may be used and they may be preheated with or without the diluent. In examples, mono-chloropyrazine is obtained by (1) vaporizing pyrazine at 250-330 DEG C. in a nitrogen stream, mixing with chlorine preheated to 150-250 DEG C. and passing over activated carbon at 250-288 DEG C. for a contact time of 5 secs., (2) vaporizing pyrazine at 220 DEG C. in a nitrogen stream, mixing with chlorine and nitrogen preheated to 240 DEG C. and passing over diatomaceous earth impregnated with cupric chloride solution at 390-430 DEG C. for a contact time of 2-5 secs., and (3) vaporizing pyrazine at 280 DEG C. in a nitrogen stream, mixing with chlorine and nitrogen preheated to 295 DEG C. and heating at 510-585 DEG C. with a contact time of 0.2 secs.
