[Class 58] In roasting granular material such as coffee, nuts, beans or grains, the material is fed from a hopper 62 onto the upper upwardly moving run of an endless wire band 34 in a roasting unit C and caused to be intercommingled by downwardly moving transverse flights 45 carried by chains 43. Superheated steam is used for roasting and is distributed evenly by means of a perforated plate 35, on which the band 34 rests, and perforated lateral pipes 17 from a superheater B via a manifold 15. The steam is exhausted through a manifold 51 by means of a fan or chimney 54 provided with a regulating damper 55. The material is fed by gravity from hopper 62 to a cylinder 60 fitted with a rotatable valve 63 having segmental cavities 64 which on rotation are filled and then discharged through chute 58 and passage 56 on to the band. The rates of feed and of the chain 43 are synchronized by means of chain and sprocket attachments to the shaft of the valve 63 and shaft 19 which is driven by an electric motor. The material is discharged into hoppers 72, 73 on to a continuous woven wire conveyor 74 of the cooling unit D. Spaced bridge bars 80 with depending triangular baffle 81 are provided on the upper edges of the side walls. An exhaust fan 89 draws air through the material as it rides on the conveyer to be discharged into a chute 84. In a modification, the lower run may move upwardly and the flights downwardly within the band, the coffee, etc., being discharged on to the lower run.
