Abstract
612,738. Mixing fluids in flow. CANDY, F. P., and THOMAS. W. D. J. May 31, 1946, No. 16524. [Class 86] Apparatus for adding proportional doses of fluid to water flowing under pressure comprises two motive units operated by the water and working a fluid injection pump or pumps, each unit having a double acting piston (or an equivalent pair of single acting pistons) working in a cylinder and furnished with a piston rod which operates a valve that controls the reciprocation of the other unit. Water under pressure is fed through a pipe 19, Fig. 1, to valves 7, 8 controlling the working of pairs of opposed single acting pistons 3, 3 and 4, 4 mounted in cylinders 1, 2, respectively. A plunger pump 17 is operated by an extension of the piston rod 5 carrying the pistons 3 to inject doses of treating fluid through the pipe 16 into the water discharged from the cylinders 1, 2 through the pipe 15. In the position shown the valve 7 allows the water to pass through an opening 11 to the left-hand end of the cylinder 2 to drive the piston 4 to the right, whilst the water to the right of the piston 4 exhausts to the outlet pipe 15 through the valve opening 12. During. this movement of the piston 4 one of two collars 10 on the piston rod 6 displaces the valve 8 to connect the pipe 19 through an opening 14 to the left-hand side of the piston 3, so that when the movement of the piston 4 ceases the piston 3 is moved to the right. An opening 12 is then connected with the water inlet 19 on the movement of the valve 7 by one of two collars 9 on the piston rod 5, and the piston 4 is moved to the left, so that water is exhausted through the opening 11 which is connected by the movement of the valve 7 with the outlet pipe 15. The valve 8 is displaced by the second collar 10 on the rod 6 to connect the opening 13 with the water inlet 19 so that the piston 3 is moved to the left, and the cycle of operations is repeated. Means is provided for preventing accidental movement of the valves 7, 8 from their extreme positions and this means may be combined with a counter device for registering the number of strokes and/or the volume of water passed.
