Abstract
612,404. Electric resonators. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. July 3, 1942, No. 924@. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1941. [Class 40 (viii)] [Also in Group XL (a)] One of the resonators of a velocity-modulated tube, such as the catcher resonator 1, is divided ' into two insulated but capacitatively coupled conducting sections 21, 24, each section including an electron permeable wall portion or grid 20, 19. This enables a unidirectional accelerating voltage to be applied between the parts 21, 24 which is shown to increase the power output without increasing the grid losses. As applied to the buncher resonator 2, the construction may be used for applying either a unidirectional voltage or a low-frequency modulating voltage. To reduce the leakage of high-frequency energy, the gap between the resonator parts is backed by a multi-section filter consisting of alternate large diameter quarter-wave sections 21, 42 (capacitative) and small diameter quarterwave sections 41, 47 (inductive). A similar filter is described made up as a separate unit with spacing insulation between the large sections and the outer shell 48, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). Cooling fluid is passed inside the sections to cool the electron collecting surface 22. The resonator 2 may be turned to a harmonic of the bunching frequency, for frequency multiplication. In modifications, the cross-section of Fig. 1 is rotated about an external axis parallel to the electron beam, Fig. 5 (not shown), or perpendicular to it. The grids covering the resonator wall openings are omitted in Fig. 5. Specifications 523,712, 530,785, 548,725, 554,574, 581;983 and 8372/41, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, are referred to.
