Abstract

645,123. Velocity-modulated tubes. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Dec. 31, 1945, No. 35329. Convention date, Nov. 14, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] The electron stream is divided into a number of separate ribbon-shaped beams 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 6, lying one above the other in a plane and interacting with the same cylindrical re-entrant resonator such as the buncher 1, which is excited so as to oscillate in a mode which provides a voltage antinode for each beam. It is shown mathematically that an increase in power is obtainable over a single beam of the same dimensions. The device may be a tworesonator klystron with a separate catcher resonator 2, or a single-resonator oscillator of the coaxial-line or reflex type. In a modification, there are four sets of ribbon-shaped beams 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>11</SP>, 5<SP>111</SP>, Fig. 8, each interacting with a separate re-entrant portion of concentrically-arranged buncher and catcher resonators 1, 2 respectively.
