Abstract
611,643. Metal-melting furnaces. NEW JERSEY ZINC CO. May 2, 1946, No. 13405. Convention date, Dec. 21, 1945. [Class 51(ii)] [Also in Group II] Melting of metallic powders, particularly zinc, is facilitated by charging them from a hopper 14 into a furnace chamber B in which a rotor 16 flings up a shower of molten metal particles. A bath of molten metal is heated by the burner 7 in the chamber A separated from the chamber B by a pendant wall 5, said bath discharging molten metal into a casting trough 13. The rotor 16 made of graphite, silicon carbide or the like, is formed with pockets 24 and keyed to a hollow driving shaft 17 by an insulating cemeht sleeve 19, the shaft being liquid cooled. A non-oxidising gas such as carbon monoxide is fed to the chamber B and a sal-ammoniac flux may be used if the zinc powder is heavily oxidised.
