Abstract
611,503. Shaft seals. BEST, C., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Nov. 26, 1946, No. 3920/48. Divided out of Complete Specification of 611,416. [Class 122 (v)] In a shaft seal of the type in which one end of a rubber sleeve is secured to the shaft and the other end is formed as a sealing ring having an end face held by a helical spring in sealing engagement with the shaft bearing, a sealing ring 4 pressed by a spring 6 against a co-operating ring 7 is secured to a shaft 2 by a rubber sleeve 1 which comprises a tubular portion surrounding, and being clamped by an outer ring 5 to, the periphery of the ring 4 and a further tubular portion encircling and being permanently secured to the shaft 2, e.g. by a ring 3. Rubber forced by the ring 5 into a circumferential groove in the ring 4 assists in securing the latter to the sleeve and hence to the shaft 2. The ring 7 of bronze is held in the housing bearing 8 by a metal ring 9.
