Abstract

608,764. Riveted joints. CATHCART, S. D., and KENDALL & SONS, Ltd. Oct. 6, 1945, Nos. 26096/45, 29820/46 (divided out of 31963/45) and 29202/46. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group VII] Figs. 1, 2 and 4 show an umbrella cover 1 which has a series of bushed eyelets 3 through each of which passes a solid rivet 9 which also passes through a transverse, passage 7 in a socket member 5 having a friction fit over the end 6 of a rib 4 of the umbrella. The eyelet 3 is seated on a flat face 13 of a groove 12 of the socket member. In the construction shown in Fig. 8, the socket element of the connection is formed by the end 15 of the rib 4 and the member 16 riveted to the cover is formed with a plug end to fit into the socket element. In the construction shown in Fig. 9, a bifurcated rivet 24 is used, the free ends 25 being turned back,to lie in an arcuate groove 26 in the socket member 5. In the construction shown in Fig. 10. the cover 1 is riveted to the ribs 4 by rivets 27 passing through the eyelets 3 and through holes 29 in the flattened ends 28 of the ribs, the ends of the ribs being swaged over at 30. The members 5 and 16 are of partly cylindrical and partly conical form with a ball end, but they may be round or square-ended, cylindrical or hexagonal members and may be of metal, if desired plated, or coloured or anodized, or they may be made of plastic material. The bushed eyelets 3 are of aluminium or aluminium alloy anodized to a wide variation of colours or may be made of or coated with coloured plastic material; the heads of the rivets may also be so coated.
