Abstract
Gases are freed from phosphine and/or arsine together with any hydrogen sulphide present by the oxidation of these compounds with hypochlorous acid, the gases being continuously treated with a very dilute solution of hypochlorous ions, e.g. a solution containing 1-20 grams of sodium hypochlorite per litre, buffered by the salts formed by the neutralization of the phosphoric and/or arsenic acids formed in the process. The gases may be injected into the bottom of a tower containing the purifying liquid flowing downwardly. Liquid from the base of the tower is circulated up a second tower into which a solution of an alkali, for example caustic soda, sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, and chlorine is introduced, forming fresh hypochlorite and neutralizing the acid salt. The solution passes into the top of the purifying tower. A part of the liquid may be removed from the base of the purifying tower for recovering the phosphates, arsenates and sulphates contained therein. The pH of purifying solution may be regulated at 9.2. The purification of acetylene and carbon dioxide are referred to.ALSO:Acetylene is freed from phosphine and/or arsine together with any hydrogen sulphide present by the oxidation of these compounds with hydrochlorous acid, the gas being continuously treated with a very dilute solution of hypochlorous ions, e.g. a solution containing 1-20 grams of sodium hypochlorite per litre, buffered by the salts formed by the neutralization of the phosphoric and/or arsenic acids formed in the process.
