Abstract
608,120. Power steering for vehicles. LETOURNEAU, Inc., R. G. March 7, 1946, No. 7176. Convention date, June 29, 1945. [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXXII] A coupling between a two-wheeled tractor and a trailer, providing power steering as well as draught, comprises an upstanding post 7 mounted on the tractor 1 with freedom for pivotal movement relatively to the tractor about a longitudinal axis defined by trunnions 5, 5 journalled in lugs 6, 6 on the tractor deck and a sleeve 8 mounted on the post, rigidly connected with the trailer, and adapted to be rotated about the post 7 by mechanism driven from the tractor through a universal joint 27. The sleeve 8 is rigid with a housing 9 terminating rearwardly in a plate 10 bolted to the draft tongue 2 of the trailer. Within the housing 9 is a reversing gear operated by fluid pressure controlled clutches 25 selective operation of which steers the tractor-trailer combination. The gear is driven from a shaft 26 on the tractor, through coupling 27, shaft 15 journalled within the post 7, and shaft 20, and drives a shaft 21 bearing a pinion 22 which meshes internally with a gear 23 rigid with the post 7. The centre of the joint 27 lies on the axis of the trunnions 5, or, alternatively, may be replaced by two universal joints connected by a spline connection. A shield 24 protects the inside of gear 23 and a bellows 28 the joint 27.
