Abstract
Double sodium zirconium sulphates are produced from impure zirconium compounds by preparing a solution containing ZrO2, Na2O and SO3, having at least 0.6 to 2 mols Na2SO4 per mol ZrO2, and having 2.3 to 6 mols SO3 per mol ZrO2 for obtaining Salt B ZrOSO4 0.75 Na2SO4 H2O, and 3 to 10 mols SO3 per mol ZrO2 for obtaining Salt A Zr(SO4)2 Na2SO4 4H2O, and crystallizing by evaporation by heating, preferably to the boiling point, to bring the mother liquor to a total SO3 concentration of 20-45 p.c. by weight, namely 20-33 p.c. for Salt B and 33-45 p.c. for Salt A. Preferably the mol ratio of Na2SO4 to ZrO2 is 1-1.75 while the mol ratio SO3 to ZrO2 is 2.5-4.5 for Salt B and 4-6 for Salt A. The solution may be produced by fritting zircon with sodium carbonate, adding sulphuric acid, and removing insoluble compounds, e.g. silica by filtration. Mother liquor from a previous operation may be used to provide sulphuric acid for adjusting the SO3 concentration.
