Abstract

606,365. Vehicle bodies. CRAVENS RAILWAY CARRIAGE & WAGON CO., Ltd., and WHITE, S. Jan. 12, 1946, No. 1153. [Classes 103 (iv) and 108 (i)] A frame for a vehicle body comprises pillars 1 formed of rectangular section from sheet metal and having a slot 1b flanked by the inwardly turned edges 1a of the section, the pillars being joined by horizontal corrugated metal rails 7, 7a, 7b extending substantially the full length of the vehicle above and below the windows 8, 9 and also by angle and Z-section rails 1c, 1d. The pillars are connected transversely by floor supporting members 2, 19 each comprising channel members facing in opposite directions and embracing the posts 1, the upper and lower pairs of flanges being united between the posts 1 by horizontal plates, which may be omitted in the lower members 2. The frame is further reinforced by bracing 11 and by brackets 15, 18 which support fillets 14, 17 between the walls and floors. The outer skin 6 is attached to wooden packings 5, 10, the former held by cleats 4 on the posts 1 and the latter secured in the corrugations of the rails 7, 7a, 7b. The vertical pillars may be jointed at the seat rail 3.
