Abstract

605,940. Agricultural implements. WHARTON & OLDING, Ltd., and WHARTON, W. April 15, 1945, No. 25208/44. [Classes 6(i) and 6(ii)] A portable cultivating and tilling machine comprises an electric motor 1 driving in opposite directions sets of tines or cultivators 10. In working position the motor assembly is attached to the bars 22 at the pivots 21 and to the bar 24 by means of a bolt 25 passing through the end-hole 24<SP>x</SP>. For transport the bolt is passed through a hole 24<SP>x</SP> higher up the bar 24. The motor spindle is geared through a clutch to the tine bar 9 and this is in turn geared to the tine bar 8. The machine may be used without wheels, a handle bar being fitted by bars direct to the motor at 15 and 28. In a modification the landwheels may be driven from one of the tine spindles through a telescopic shaft. In a further wheeled modification the handle structure is pivotally mounted on a pair of plates fixed to the motor gear casing; means on the structure, engaging slots in the plates, are controlled from the handlebar to vary the working position of the machine. Springs are fixed to the plates, the other ends being mounted on a bar on which the wheel frame is pivoted for balancing the machine relative to the wheels and partly removing the load from the handle. The machine may be driven by an internal combustion engine the crankshaft of which drives the tine shafts through a horizontally disposed worm-gear.
