Abstract
490,252. Implements and machines for working land. MURRAY, J. B. April 13, 1937, No. 10522. [Class 6 (i)] A tilling-machine adapted to be drawn by a tractor is supported by a single pair of land wheels 14 and is provided with rotary implements 17 on a transverse shaft so disposed as to give little more than a working clearance between the implements 17 and the land wheels or land wheel axle. The implements are driven by the engine 11 of the tractor only the rear part of which is shown. The frame of the tilling machine carries on opposite sides a gear case 20 and a plate 21 in which the tool shaft 16 is journalled and which are connected at their upper ends by tubes 23 carrying a gear box 24 between them. The tubes 23 enclose a shaft which is chain geared to the tool shaft 16 and which is rotated from the tractor engine through universal couplings 26, 27. A clutch 25a is provided between the coupling 26 and gear box 24. The working depth of the tools can be adjusted or the tools raised clear of the ground by rotating spindles 30 provided on each side of the machine. The spindles actuate sliding blocks 28 in which the axle of the land wheels is journalled. As shown in Fig. 2 the tubes 23 are of different lengths so that when the machine is drawn by a centredrive tractor as shown one of the land wheels 14 follows in the track of one of the tractor wheels, the other land wheel being outside the track of the other tractor wheel. By reversing the positions of the tubes 23 and moving the gear box the driving rod can be brought into the position 32 for use with a tractor of the side drive type. The tools 17 are fixed to the shaft 16 by bolts passing through flanges 35 on the shaft which may be provided with a series of apertures to enable the tools to be fixed in any position. A guard 33 is mounted over the tools and carries a series of pivoted spring tines 34 which can be adjusted in position by a handle 34b and rack 34c. In a modification the distance between the land wheels 14 is less than the overall length of the series of tools on the shaft 16 and the tips of the tools just clear the peripheries of the land wheels. Fig. 4 shows another method of mounting the land wheel axle to enable it to be raised and lowered. The axle 15 is journalled in a member 37 which has a series of teeth 38 engaging the teeth of racks 40 one of which is fixed to the machine frame, the other being pivoted at 41 and movable by a handle 43. The handle can be fixed in any position by a spring detent 44.
