Abstract

604,915. Coated films; compound sheet materials. AUSTIN, A. ST. J., SAPIRO, R. H., and FRASER, R. P. Jan. 10, 1945, No. 856. [Class 140] [Also in Groups X and XVI] A compound sheet consists of a thin, flexible, transparent, water-absorbent, cellulosic film adapted to be secured to a glass or like surface, to prevent mist or frost, by means of a water-soluble adhesive layer, e.g. gelatine, carried on one of its faces, and a removable protective carrier or backing sheet secured to its other face by an adhesive layer which readily weakens when the sheet is wetted for applying the film to the glass. The film and the exposed adhesive for securing it to the glass may be as described in Specifications 564,987, 564,989 and 564,993. The adhesive for securing the film to the removable backing may be similar but modified to soften more rapidly than the exposed adhesive, by using different grades of gelatine, or by using additional ingredients to promote softening. Alternatively, the film and backing may be united by a waterproof varnish such as polyvinyl formal from which the film detaches itself when wet. The backing may be water-penetrable such as paper or regenerated cellulose, or water-impenetrable, and may be printed with instructions for applying the material.
