Abstract
604,458. Galvanic batteries. STEVENS, A. H. (Ray-o-Vac Co.). July 21, 1945, No. 18738. [Class 53] A dry cell comprising a carbon electrode 12, depolarizer 8 and zinc cup 4 is enclosed in a water-tight container consisting of a waterproofed cardboard shell 28 the lower end of which makes a tight joint with a metal base 24 in contact with the zinc cup. The top of the zinc cup is turned over to retain sealing material 16 supported by a washer 14, and the upper end of the shell 28 is spun over a flange on a metal cover 26 provided with a part 38 fitting over the carbon rod 12. A split ring 35 presses the flange on the cover against the turnedover edge of the shell 28. Modifications of the joints between the base and cover and the shell 28 are described, the periphery of the base being in all cases bent to grip the turned-in edge of the shell. The latter may consist of layers of fibrous material with the faces treated with asphalt or other water-proofing material. A spring 36 may be interposed between the base 24 and the zinc cup.
