Abstract

604,440. Photographic films. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. March 9, 1945, No. 5922. Convention date, March 16, 1944. [Class 98 (ii)] A photographic element comprises a support containing at least one layer of orientable vinyl fluoride polymer, which has a softening point above 150‹ C., and carries at least one light sensitive layer. Interpolymers with polymerisable olefinic compounds such as vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, tetrafluoroethylene, di- and tri-fluoroethylenes and ethylene in which vinyl fluoride represents at least 80 per cent by weight of the interpolymer may be used. The film support may include a plasticizer such as N-methyl-p-toluenesulphonamide, N - ethyl - p - toluenesulphonamide, dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate or caprolactam. The films may also be made by coating a cellulose nitrate or acetate film with the vinyl fluoride polymer. The light sensitive layer may incorporate specified light sensitive silver halides, bichromated hydrophilic colloids such as albumin, gelatin, gum arabic, polyvinyl alcohols or glue, light-sensitive iron salts or diazonium compounds ; or substances specially sensitive to ultra-violet light such as anhydrides of fulgenic acid. In addition to the light sensitive layer other types of water-permeable colloid layers may be superimposed on the vinyl fluoride polymer film supports ; suitable colloids for these layers include polyvinyl alcohol, partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetates, mixed polyvinyl-ehloride-acetates, certain vinyl interpolymers, esters and acetals ; specified lowly substituted cellulose esters and ethers, casein, albumin, gelatin, gum arabic, agar-agar and polyglycuronic acid. These layers may contain substances responsive to development or bleaching of silver images, dyes or colour formers, filters, antihalation substances, pigments or other material. Subbing coats, which may include materials such as cellulose esters and various specified vinyl and vinylidene polymers may be used between the vinyl fluoride polymer support and the superimposed layers. Specifications 531,579, 542,703, 542,704, 551,659 and 605,445, [Group IV (a)], are referred to.
