Abstract

601,326. Chucks. HARRIS, C. S., and GOLD, B. Oct. 1, 1945, No. 25421. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A vacuum chuck or workholder is provided with retractable work - gripping means adapted to be moved into operative position when the work is in position. The chuck comprises a block 3 having a chamber 6 in its rear face, from which air passages 4 extend to a work-receiving face 5 and passages 18 to an annular recess 13 in which slides a collar 12 having a tapered flange 15. On applying a vacuum, and when the work is in position to close the passages 4, the collar 12 is drawn forward to press pins 8, slidably mounted in radial apertures in the forward part of the block 3, inward to grip the work. On applying pressure air the collar is forced back and the work is released, which action is assisted by centrifugal force due to the rotation of the chuck.
