Abstract
600,556. Fuzes for aerial bombs. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., MORPETH, W., and HESELTINE, J. C. W. Aug. 18, 1943, No. 13487. [Class 9 (i)] An aerial bomb having a safety device operated by. air pressure during the fall of the bomb to prevent the arming of the bomb until after release, and described particularly with reference to the bomb forming the subject of Specifications 600,555 and 600,557, in which the bomb has an impact fuze switch or impact head at the leading end of a telescopic system which projects the impact head &c. in advance of the bomb during flight in order that the bomb may be detonated before actually reaching the target, has a locking device released by air pressure to free the means for arming the bomb. The striker 7 or fuze-switch in the impact head is locked by a bar 11 which is withdrawn on release of the bomb from the aircraft. Rotation of the wind vane 13 after withdrawal of the bar 11 to arm the bomb is delayed until the dynamic air pressure operating through apertures 34 in the wind vane is sufficient to displace a spring-pressed disc 28 splined on the sleeve 17 and having a stud 33 normally projecting into one of the apertures 34. A grating is fitted over the apertures to prevent digital operation of the locking stud 33.
