600,488. Clutches. NATIONAL SUPPLY CORPORATION, and OIL WELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. July 31, 1945, No. 19656. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1944. [Class 80 (ii)] A clutch device for alternatively clutching a chain sprocket 4 to a shaft 2, on which it is rotatably mounted, or to another sprocket 5, also rotatably mounted upon the shaft, comprises an axially sliding member 28 with internal teeth 28a and external teeth 31 adapted to engage respectively with external teeth 30 on a sleeve member 13 secured to the shaft 2 and internal teeth 32, 37 on the sprockets 4 and 5 respectively. The member 28 is actuated by a spider 23 rotatably secured thereto by a clamp ring 26 and axially slidable on a key 23a on the hub 19 of sprocket 5, arms 25 of the spider passing through openings 22 in the flange 21 of the sprocket. In the position of the clutch member 28 shown, the teeth 31 engage the teeth 32 of the sprocket 4, but no connection is made to either the shaft 2 or sprocket 5. On sliding member 28 to the left, the teeth 28a engage the teeth 30 on the sleeve 13 secured to the shaft 2 to provide a direct connection between sprocket 4 and the shaft. On moving member 28 to the right, teeth 31 engage the teeth 37 of sprocket 5 in addition to the teeth 32 of sprocket 4 so that the sprockets are directly connected. A special application is described of the shaft 2 driving the hoisting drum of a drilling rig, the sprocket 4 being driven from a. power source by a multiple chain and the sprocket 5 being connected by another chain to another machine of the drilling apparatus.
