Abstract
599,704. Crown cork closures. CROWN CORK & SEAL CO., Inc. April 26, 1945, No. 10552. Convention date, May 29, 1944. [Classes 125 (ii) and 125 (iii)] A crown cap having the same overall diameter as a standard crown cap of the same rated size comprises a circular top portion 16, Fig. 3. an upstanding ring portion 17 adjoining this, followed by a smooth shoulder of curved axial section adapted to extend downwards from the top of the lip of the container, close to the outside thereof, and an outwardly directed annular flange 18 radially fluted throughout its entire circumference adjoining said shoulder with the tops of the flutes terminating at its lower edge. The height of the cap .up to the top of the shoulder is substantially less than that of a standard crown cap, the height of the ring portion being such as to give the cap the same overall height as the standard one. Figs. 3, 10, 16, 19 show various embodiments in section. Gasketing material may comprise a ring of plastic material under the curved shoulder portion, or a central disc of suitable material may be located in the top portion, or both these methods may be used together; alternatively an overall facing of plastic gasketing material may be applied to the sheet from which the cap is punched. The bottom of the presser foot used for applying the cap may be recessed to avoid crushing the upstanding ring portion.
