Abstract
A monomeric mixed ester of a polycarboxylic acid containing at least three carbon atoms in the molecule and in which at least one of the carboxyl hydrogen atoms of the acid has been replaced by the radical of an allyl-type alcohol and at least one other carboxyl hydrogen atom of the acid has been replaced by the radical of a vinyl-type alcohol is polymerized alone or together with an organic compound containing one or more unsaturated carbon to carbon linkages by the action of heat, light and/or catalysts, directly or in solution or dispersion. Among the specified polycarboxylic acids are malonic, succinic, glutaric, adipic, azelaic, methyl succinic, tricarballylic, citric, cyclopentane - 1,2,3 - tricarboxylic, phthalic, terephthalic, naphthalene dicarboxylic acids, diglycolic, dilactic, dihydracrylic acids and those of the class HOOC-R-SO2-R-COOH. Examples of vinyl-type alcohols are vinyl alcohol, iso - propenol, buten - 1 - ol - 2, propen - 1 - ol - 1, buten - 1 - ol - 1, cyclohexen - 1 p - ol - 1 - and cyclopenten - 1 - ol - 1. Among the specified allyl-type alcohols are allyl alcohol, chlorallyl alcohol, buten-1-ol-3, 2-methyl-penten - 1 - ol - 3, octan - 1 - ol - 3, 3 - tolyl - propen-1 - ol - 3, crotyl alcohol, tiglyl alcohol, and 5,7-dimethyl - octadien - 2,7 - ol - 1. Specified mixed allyl-type vinyl-type esters include allyl vinyl malonate, allyl vinyl succinate, allyl vinyl adipate, allyl vinyl phthalate, allyl vinyl diglycolate, methallyl vinylmalonate, allyl isopropenyl malonate, allyl isopropenyl dihydracrylate, diallyl vinyl citrate and divinyl allyl citrate. Typical compounds with which these esters may be copolymerized are styrene, vinyl halides, vinylidene halides, vinyl esters of saturated monocarboxylic acids, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, allyl halides, allyl esters of saturated monocarboxylic acids, alkyds, conjugated butadiene, isoprene, conjugated chlorobutadiene, and diallyl glycolate. The usual polymerization catalysts are specified. The products may be mixed with other synthetic resins, natural resins, drying oils, urea-aldehyde resins, phenol-aldehyde resins, linear super-polyamides and polyesteramides as well as with the usual plasticizers, stabilizers, lubricants, dyes, pigments and fillers.
