Abstract

Synthetic resins are prepared by reacting by addition an unsaturated cycloacetal containing the group <FORM:0757573/IV(a)/1> <FORM:0757573/IV(a)/2> with one or more unsaturated compounds containing one or more OH groups, and copolymerizing the unsaturated addition compound thus formed with one or more vinyl and/or vinylidene compounds. Preferred cycloacetals are those formed by condensation of pentaerythritol with acrolein, particularly diallylidene pentaerythritol; other cycloacetals may be prepared from trimethylol ethane, trimethylol propane or glycerine condensed with a ,b -unsaturated aldehydes. The unsaturated compounds containing hydroxyl groups may be unsaturated di- or poly-carboxylic acids, their esterification or amidation products which still carry at least one free OH group, polyhydric unsaturated alcohols or their esterification products with at least one free OH group or unsaturated hydroxycarboxylic acids; suitable unsaturated compounds are maleic acid, fumaric acid, the dehydration products of citric acid and dihydromuconic acid, esters of maleic anhydride and polyhydric alcohols or phenols, butene-2-diol-1,4 and esters thereof. The vinyl and/or vinylidene compound may be triallyl cyanurate, diallyl phthalate, styrene, an acrylate or methacrylate, or vinyl acetate, and copolymerization may be effected in the presence of a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide.ALSO:Diallylidene pentaerythritol of formula <FORM:0757573/IV(a)/1> is prepared by reacting acrolein with pentaerythritol in the presence of small quantities of hydroquinone and oxalic acid. Ethylene glycol bis-(monomaleic ester) is prepared by bringing 1 mol. of ethylene glycol and 2 mols. of maleic acid anhydride into solution at about 40 DEG C. and heating for 3-4 hours at 100 DEG C. Pentaerythritol tetra-(monomaleic ester) is prepared by esterifying 1 mol. of pentaerythritol with 4 mols. of maleic acid anhydride.
