Abstract
597,960. Respirators. ABBEY, A. (American Optical Co.). July 10, 1945, No 17629. [Class 81 (ii)] A respirator comprises a face-engaging portion and a collapsable cup-like filter member of relatively thin filtering material having folded convoluted side walls such that in the collapsed position the contours of the apices of the folds lie one within the other. As shown, the face-engaging portion comprises a rigid frame 10 to which the felt, &c. filter member 11 is secured by cement 12. The material of the filter member is looped at 23 and the free edge attached to the frame by adhesive 24 to provide a face-engaging surface 26 which is coated with rubber latex, plasticized vinyl resin, neoprene, or other specified materials to provide a non-porous resilient surface. The loop portion may, if desired, be joined to frame 10 as a separate member, and in this case may be of rubber or other specified synthetic materials with or without fibres or other fillers. A valve 27 having a flap 34 is riveted &c. to the front wall of the mask, which is held in the extended position by the engagement with a clip 35 of a brace member 36 pivoted to frame 10. Other forms of latch are shown. The frame 10 may, if desired, be shaped to fit closely around the bridge of the nose. In another modification, the material of the filter member may be stuck to the outside of the frame with the free edge secured to the inside. Fig. 9 shows a further form in which the free edge of the filter member 73 is stuck to the frame 69, the material being looped at 71 to provide the distortable faceengaging portion. A coating 74 corresponding to coating 26, Fig. 2, is provided.
