Abstract

597,106. Diaphragm pumps. McCLELLAND, N. E., and SPEARS, F. G. W. Aug. 9, 1945, No. 20491. [Class 102 (i)] In a diaphragm pump an eccentric 3 actuates a ram piston 7 which acts on a body of oil confined in the chamber 14 between the ram piston 7 and the diaphragm 13 causing a pumping action to be transmitted to the pumping liquid in the pump chamber 15. The chamber 23 acts as a reservoir, the oil contained therein serving as a lubricant for the eccentric 3, and is in communication with the chamber 14 through the non-return valves 24, 25 ; the valve 24 permits oil to return to the reservoir 23 in the event of excess pressure obtaining in the chamber 14 and the valve 25 allows oil to flow to the chamber 14 when its pressure is less than atmospheric. In a modification, the effective stroke of the ram is controlled by means of an adjustable rod secured to the pump body which operates a ball valve situated in a passage that extends from the working face to the non-working face of the ram 7.
