Abstract
596,553. Conditioning tobacco. BOWEN, G. H. July 30, 1945, No. 19484. [Class 130] Tobacco leaves moving through a closed chamber a on a permeable wire-mesh conveyer are subjected to heated and moistened air circulated by a fan d so that it flows upwardly and downwardly at the entrance and exit ends of the chamber, as indicated by the arrows. A battery of steam-heated pipes and a steam spray for the air are located adjacent the fan and controlled by dry and wet bulb thermometers n, m respectively. Adjustable air locks b, c, k are provided at the entry and exit of the conveyer and directly under the fan. The air is guided by baffles h. Additional suction conduits l extend from the fan to the entrance and exit ends of the chamber to prevent air leakage. In a modification, the air is delivered by the fan to both ends of the chamber above and below the conveyer respectively. A tapering slot equalizes the supply.
