[Class 109] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXVI] In a method of and apparatus for producing endless cable coverings from layers of band material wound on a stationary mandrel 1 through which the cable passes, the tube of band material is drawn through rotary helical members comprising a worm 4 and nut 2 having single or multiple threads of taper form arranged so that the tube is grooved and at the same time its diameter is reduced to ensure that it fits tightly around the cable. The thread 5 of the nut has an end portion. 6 which extends inwardly beyond the line of the thread crests. In a modification, Fig. 2, having a double threaded nut, the extended portions of the threads are constituted by separate interchangeable inset pieces 10, 10<1> which may be resiliently mounted.
