Abstract
595,636. Electric induction furnaces. BENNETT, R. S., GITTINS, G. F., and BRIDGE, J. F. Oct. 27, 1944, No. 20996. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group II] An induction furnace comprises a shallow chamber with a high-frequency winding 10 located on the underside thereof and wound with the progressive convolutions of increasing diameter in a flat plane or in the form of a hollow truncated cone. In order to obtain turbulence of the molten charge, auxiliary coils 14, 13, energized from a single phase industrial supply may be fixed on the underside and roof respectively or coil 13 may be replaced by three flat coils located at points spaced round the roof axis and energized from a polyphase industrial supply. Alternatively, auxiliary polyphase windings may be arranged on the underside of the furnace either wound coaxial with the high-frequency winding 10 or wound as a series of coils 16 on laminated formers 15 arranged at points spread radially and circumferentially and adapted to be so phase-connected as to obtain any desired circulatory or radial movement of the molten charge.
