Abstract

594,082. Microphones. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES. Ltd., and POCOCK, L. C. Aug. 15, 1944, No. 15574. [Class 40 (iv)] In a microphone of the variable resistance type in which granules of conductive material, usually carbon, form one or more current paths between electrodes and in which a movable electrode forms one wall of an otherwise rigidly constructed chamber, a cold flowing material, for instance lead, is pressed into position against at least one of the joints between component parts of the chamber. The joint may include a film or films of viscous material which may be supplemented or replaced by one or more insertions of rubber. In the microphone described, the front electrode comprises a dome-shaped portion 8 and a flat portion 7 secured to the casing 1 by a lead seal 9. A cylindrical portion of the casing 1 forming a chamber for the granules is closed by a member 2 carrying the back electrode 3 and secured to the casing by a metal washer 5, insulating discs 4 and a lead seal 6, which may be covered by a viscous film. The diaphragm 10 is secured to the front electrode by serrations 11 engaging the domed portion 8 and the space behind the diaphragm is vented by holes 17 in the casing 1. An annular spring plate 14 and a wire gauze annulus 15 secured to the casing by a bayonet joint are pressed against the casing 1 when the transmitter is inserted in a holder, and the plate 14 has openings 16 in register with the holes 17. In an alternative construction, Fig. 3 (not shown), a rubber ring is compressed between the holder of the back electrode and the rear wall of the casing, and the viscous film is omitted. The diaphragm has a frusto-conical portion held by spring action against the domed part of the front electrode which may be made of carbon-coated nickel as described in Specification 594,116.
