Abstract

494,293. Transmitters. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., POCOCK, L. C., and LEMAN, H. S. April 19, 1937, No. 11126. [Class 40 (iv)] In a telephone transmitter of the carbongranule type comprising an air chamber enclosed between a light diaphragm and the casing of the transmitter and one or more holes in the casing whereby the air chamber is in communication with the outer air, the dimensions of the chamber and the hole or holes are so chosen that an anti-resonance is produced at a frequency approximately equal to the resonance frequency of the diaphragm and the said air chamber without the said hole or holes, and the hole or holes in the casing are covered with acoustic attenuating material. The dome-shaped electrode 3 is connected to a diaphragm 2 clamped between a ring 15 and the casing 1 by a spun-over cover 12. A metal spider 4 and a silk washer 5 are clamped to a porcelain member 6 on which is mounted a graphite electrode 7 held in position by an insulating ring 9 and a cover 10. The filling hole 19 for the granule chamber is covered by a metal cap 11. The space 20 at the back of the diaphragm, which is less than usual and has a volume of 0À095 cubic inch or less, communicates with the outer air by one or more holes 13 covered by discs 14 of acoustic resistance material, such as heavy silk. The space in front of the diaphragm and the openings in the cover plate 12 may be designed and dimensioned in a manner similar to that described in Specification 481,740. The diaphragm has a thickness of approximately 0À003 inch and the holes 13 are preferably of diameter 0À152 inch and have a depth of 0À040 inch. Specification 435,130 also is referred to.
