Abstract
591,176. Knurling. TRUMBLE, J., and HILLMAN, W. C. April 30, 1945, No. 10819. [Class 83 (iv)] A knurling head comprises three knurling wheels f carried by levers e supported on pins g rotatably and removably mounted in holes h in a back plate b around which is a ring c having an interior cam surface d such that rotation of the ring in one direction moves the levers so that the wheels engage the work and in the other direction so that the wheels may be moved away from the work by the action of springs l. The ring c may be rotated directly by a lever n or by a chuck key r having teeth engaging rack teeth cut in the edge of the ring. A locking nut p carries an index mark cooperating with a scale on the surface of the ring. The interior of the head is closed by a plate o having a central opening o<1> for the entrance of the work. In operation, the head would be mounted in the turret of a capstan lathe by means of a hollow sleeve a integral with the back plate b and would be fed endwise over the rotating work carried by the lathe chuck. A hole c<1> is provided in the ring c for the clearance of swarf.
