Abstract
590,302. Wave guides. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. April 17, 1945, No. 9636. Convention date, April 28, 1944. [Class 40 (v)] In a wave guide transmission system, Fig. 1 shows a filter for removing TE waves from a mixed source 6 of TE and TM waves feeding a TM load 7 through a wave guide 8. The middle section of the wave guide is enlarged at 18 and is formed with radial slots 9 arranged 90 degrees apart. The slots are an odd number of quarter wavelengths deep and the openings 17 into the guide are about one wavelength long and one-sixteenth wavelength wide. Thus, only the TM waves which have no transverse current component are not attenuated by the slots 9 and pass to load 7. The slots 9 may be filled with dissipative material such as graphite held in a binder such' as plaster of paris. Fig. 3 shows a modification for removing from a mixed source 21 all waves having a longitudinal component of current, and feeding TE waves to a load 22. The filter comprises an annular quarter-wave slot 24 formed in enlarged section 23 so as to attenuate longitudinal currents. The width W of the slot is about one-sixteenth of a wavelength. The slot may be filled with dissipative material. The filters may also be applied to the outer conductor of a coaxial line.
