Abstract

590,151. Electrolytic cells. MATHIESON ALKALI WORKS. April 16, 1945, No. 9457. Convention date, May 4, 1944. [Class 41] The bottom of an electrolytic cell for decomposing salt solutions is formed by a graphite slab 10 which supports and makes electrical contact with a mercury cathode 20. Side walls 2 and 3 are bolted to the graphite and insulated from it and the electrolyte 21 by a rubber lining 8. The graphite slab is sufficiently thick to allow bolts 16 to pass transversely through it to secure the sides and to attach an electrical conductor 22 by bolts 23. In another form the side walls are bent horizontally inwards and then downwards and a graphite slab of less width than the cell is bolted in the bottom space thus formed. The cell may be extended longitudinally by joining graphite slabs together by means of recessed bolts. Specification 548,428 is referred to.
