[Class 50] [Also in Group XXI] A repeatedly ignitible composition rod comprises a core containing an igniting substance and a hydrated inorganic salt having at least two molecules of water of crystallization per molecule of salt, and an outer layer containing a solid combustible substance such as metaldehyde or nitrocellulose of pyroxylin type, or both. The core may include both inflammable and oxidising materials such as phosphorus and potassium chlorate, which may be used in excess; or one of them may be comprised in the striking surface. Combustion-retarding agents such as chalk, zinc oxide and calcium plumbate may also be included. Suitable hydrated salts are Na3 PO4 12 H2O, NAHH4 HPO4 4 H2O and A12 (SO4)3 18 H2O. In place of a combustible binder such as gum arabic an organo-silicon compound polymerizing to a resin may be used. The core and layer may be extruded in one operation and the rod coated with lacquer or asbestos composition. Specification 500,219 is referred to.
