Abstract

A smoke producing composition comprises an ammonium compound, red phosphorus, and a nitrate, permanganate, or peroxide, the ammonium compound being vaporizable by the heat generated by the burning of the red phosphorus. An example is a mixture of red phosphorus, ammonium chloride, and potassium nitrate. Methyl cellulose, pectin jelly, or naphthalene may be added as a binder, and the composition moulded to form cubes, lumps or pellets. Iodine or other sublimable material may be included for the production of coloured smoke.
