589,815. Relief valves. BUTTERFIELD, Ltd., W. P., and MOSBY, G. P. Oct. 2, 1944, No. 18808. [Class 135] A relief valve, particularly for containers wherein a vacuum or pressure is liable to be created, comprises a disc 8 of rubber or similar flexible material with slits 11 forming a number of flaps which co-operate with apertures in a perforated disc 13 secured to a cap 10 which holds the disc 8 in position over a central passage in the body portion 9. The valve flaps open to relieve vacuum in the body 9, but remain closed under pressure. The flaps may alternatively be formed by slits extending, from the periphery of the disc, in which case the disc is clamped at its centre, the flaps cooperating with suitable apertures formed in the body portion 9 to relieve pressure. In another form, both central and peripheral flaps are provided which act in opposite directions to relieve both vacuum and pressure, the disc being held at an intermediate portion.
