Abstract

588,198. Smallarms. WALLENBERG, V. H. Feb. 2, 1945, No. 2736. Convention date, April 28, 1944. [Class 119] A military rifle or similar firearm adapted to fire miniature ammunition by the provision of an insertion barrel 5, has a cartridge magazine 37 which fits into the normal magazine space 25 and which has a number of cartridge chambers which are adapted successively to be moved into the firing position, the magazine being rotatable about an axis at right angles to the symmetrical plane through the axis of the barrel. In the construction shown, the cartridge chambers 28 ... 32 are mounted tangentially on the magazine 27 which is rotatably mounted on a carrier 20. This carrier is pivoted at 21 on a floor casing which is open at the top and bottom and which is detachably fitted to the rifle. A spring 22 urges the carrier upwards and has one end removably connected to The casing 18, as by an opening 24, such connection permitting the carrier to be swung downwards to enable the magazine to be recharged or replaced. Rotation of the magazine to bring a fresh chamber into the firing position is effected by the engagement of fingers 37, 38, on a catch 34 with pins 33 on the magazine when the breech bolt 4 is retracted. For this purpose, the breech bolt is recessed to receive the upper end of a lever 17 upon which the catch is pivoted, the lever being pivoted at 36 to the floor casing, and the lever and the catch being controlled by a single spring 41. On retracting the bolt, the magazine is rotated by the fingers, the engagement of a cartridge chamber with barrel 5 serving to depress carrier 20 until the chamber clears the end of the barrel, the spring 22 then serving to swing the carrier upwardly until the fresh cartridge is aligned with the barrel. Subsequent forward movement of the breech bolt first causes an abutment 40 on the catch 34 to engage a pin 33 and thereby give a small clockwise movement to the magazine, the bolt itself subsequently forcing the cartridge chamber against the mouth of the barrel. The bolt slides in a tube 3 which carries a guide bar engaging in the usual groove of the bolt casing and which is connected to the barrel by a bayonet joint. The tube also has an internal projection which engages in a groove in the bolt, this groove consisting of 'an axially extending portion 14 ending in a circumferential part 15 which may, as shown, be extended to provide the recess for the upper end of lever 17. Alternatively, the recess for lever 17 may be separated from the part 15.
