Dec. 28, 1944, No. 25987 [Class 20 (iii)] A sheet metal door comprises an inner frame formed of horizontal and vertical channel members 8-10, channel shaped stiles 3, 4 welded to top and bottom frame members 6, 7 and the vertical members, and central panels 5 between the stiles also welded to members 6, 7 and to the horizontal members 10. Members 8, 9 are jointed to members 6, 7 by welding of tongues 25 to webs 17 and of flange ends 24 to recessed portions 13 of flanges 14. Members 10 are similarly welded to the vertical members with their tongues 32 penetrating holes 27 and notches 29 abutting flanges 22. The stile channels are placed over the ends of members 6, 7 so that their recessed edges 40 lie over the recesses 13 and the flanges 22 of the vertical members and the central panels 5 are arranged with their edges overlapping edges 40. The assembled parts are held in a jig associated with welding apparatus which forms welds at all projecting points 36, 43 at the ends of grooves 35 or similar projections formed by a pointed die. Similar welds 45 unite the panels to the stiles. Grooves 46 may be filled with metal to provide a flush surface, or in modifications the centre panels are raised above the face of the stiles or enter a channel groove formed at their edges providing, e.g., a vertical groove in the surface of the door or a recessed panel. The panel may be fluted or reeded. Holes at intervals in the webs of the frame channels enable the doors to be painted internally by dipping and check surface condensation when installed. The hinges and lock housing may be secured to the stiles before their assembly.
