Abstract

587,306. Wear-compensating means for brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and CHOUINGS, L. C. Dec. 11, 1944, No. 24831. [Class 103 (i)] An internal expanding brake comprises two shoes 13, 14 anchored at 11 and 12 respectively to the backplate and adapted to be applied to the drum 9 by a hydraulic piston and single-ended cylinder 20. The cylinder unit 20 is free to move tangentially against friction relatively to the back plate and automatic clearance adjusting means are provided between the cylinder unit 20 and the leading shoe. The clearance adjusting means may be as described in Specification 578,038. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 4, the adjusting means may comprise strips 43, 44 pressed into frictional engagement with a flange 38 on the cylinder by means of springs 45, 46 and having a lost motion engagement with the leading shoe 13 by means of a pin 50 on the shoe and slots 48, 49 in the strips. On operation, if wear has occurred, the pin 50 is forced against the left-hand sides of the slots 48, 49, so forcing the strips to slide against friction to the left relatively to the flange 38. On withdrawal of the shoes the shoe 13 is stopped by engagement of the pin 50 with the right-hand ends of the slots 48, 49 since the withdrawal, springs 18, 19, Fig. 1, are insufficiently powerful to overcome the friction between the strips 43, 44 and the flange 38.
