Abstract
586,746. Pistons. SPECIALLOID, Ltd., and GRAHAM, E. B. Sept. 15, 1944, No. 17710. [Class 122 (i)] In a piston comprising separate head and body portions 4, 1 the parts are of materials having the same coefficient of expansion and secured together by shrinking to form a chamber therebetween, closed completely or provided with a passage through which oil can be delivered from the connecting rod. Both parts may be of ferrous or light metal alloy. When completely closed, the chamber contains a cooling medium such as sodium, liquid at the working temperature, and the upper wall of the body may have an annular groove or may be corrugated. Cooling oil is supplied through a spring-loaded member 10 seated on the connecting-rod end. The chamber may be formed by radial grooves 6 in the upper part of the body communicating with a peripheral recess 13 and return passages 14. The head may accommodate a ring carrier of austenitic iron or steel, bronze &c.
